Nov. 11: Tear Off Series Part 3

This week: Sketch Designs

Sketch Design inspiration can be found in many places.

  •  Google Search: Card Making Sketches or Stamped Card Layouts

  • Pinterest: Search Sketch Design for Cardmakers or Card Making Sketches

Teresa's Rough Draft Sketches

Stampin’Up!© Grid Paper comes in handy for more than just a stamping surface. I like to use it to draft sketches, make notes, divide it into 4 quadrants for task organization and more!

It’s right in the catalog, a large pad of grid sheets.

It’s a stampers companion for sure!

Here you see that I just ‘doodled’, while on a road trip this summer.  I grabbed the lap desk ( lucky on a smooth section of road:) and let my mind wander to card design possibilities.

The funny thing is when you do this as  ‘draft doodling’ you aren’t thinking of other cardmakers designs nor what the finished card will actually be.  Just jotting down pleasing shapes in the moment.

This sketch caught my eye.

While pondering which design to land on for today’s post article, my eye landed on this one.   My original draft thought was as a mini slimline card but while creating the final sketch template I thought… ‘why couldn’t it be a tall slimline as well?’.  The template below has card measurements for both mini and tall.

I think it can – size/scale up or down your elements adding more texture with die cut or laser cut shapes, ribbon and embellishments makes this a basic sketch for Quick & Simple (aka Q & S) or Step it Up with lots of good stuff on it kind of cards.

Slim Line Card Sketch Template

When you click on the template above it will take you out to the blog post that is all envelope templates!  There you will find the DIY mini slim line and tall slim envelope templates needed for this sketch.

It’s time to stamp now that the design is firm in my mind and the template looks so nice!  Now what to grab from the crafty stash!  Sometimes this can give one crafters roadblock – EEEKKK – cue the “UH What NOW” question.  No fret- FYIF has you covered.  That template above has several suggestions for each portion of the design.  Here is what I grabbed!

Sketch Design Supplies for Masculine Christmas Card

Supplies

  • Timber 3D Embossing Folder
  • Soft Suede Cardstock
  • Boughs of Holly DSP ( Trees sheet)
  • Linen Thread
  • Scrap Basic White & inner white layer: 3″ x 5″
  • 2 Stamp Sets for Sentiments – you can use any you have on hand!

FYI Friday Quick & Simple Christmas

Mini Slim Masculine Christmas Card.  I kept this super simple and followed the sketch exactly.  I’m not feeling the best today so I went for a Mini and let the elements do the wowing.  I love the Timer 3D embossing folder.  It looks good in photo but even better on your crafting desk!

There are so many ways you can doll up this sketch to take it further than this Q & S card.

Finished Card Measurement per sketch: 3 1/4″ x 5 1/4″

Inside of card

Using a 1/4″ strip of same patterned paper (DSP) I added it to inside and offset the

sentiment to the left rather than center.

This card came together in about 15 min including the time to hunt down the linen thread I knew I had!

I skipped making the envelope today as I will sit down one afternoon and make a bunch up!

Click the sketch template above to view the blog post where you will find a template to make an envelope to match this card size!

Click on the project supplies button to hop out to the Stampin’Up! Webshop.  The project supplies are in a handy cart for you.  The items you don’t want just uncheck.
